Papermaking eventually spread to the Arab world, where it was further refined. The Arabs added new Materials to the pulp mixture, including linen and cotton. They also developed a new way of drying the paper that resulted in a smoother finish. By the 12th century, papermaking had spread to Europe, where it continued to evolve.
